Welcome to the captivating world of The Botanical Register a pioneering horticultural magazine that graced the botanical landscape from 1815 to 1847. Originally conceived by the talented botanical illustrator Sydenham Edwards this illustrious publication underwent a fascinating evolution transforming into Edwards's Botanical Register under the dedicated stewardship of subsequent editors.
The journey began in 1815 when Sydenham Edwards renowned for his previous contributions to The Botanical Magazine embarked on a new venture. However a dispute with the magazine's editors prompted Edwards to forge his own path. Over the course of five prolific years he meticulously edited five volumes of The Botanical Register until his untimely passing in 1819. During this period the textual contributions were expertly provided by John Bellenden Ker Gawler while Edwards himself painted the botanical wonders that adorned the pages—each meticulously engraved and hand-colored by skilled artisans.
Following Sydenham Edwards' departure the reins of editorial responsibility passed into the capable hands of James Ridgway the publisher. Under Ridgway's guidance an additional nine volumes were issued between 1820 and 1828 ensuring the magazine's continued legacy.
In 1829 a pivotal moment in the magazine's history unfolded with the appointment of John Lindley as the new editor. Lindley an esteemed botanist adopted the title Edwards's Botanical Register ushering in a new era. The pages of the magazine continued to flourish under his editorial vision with an impressive nineteen volumes published before the final chapter unfolded in 1847.
The legacy of Edwards's Botanical Register extends beyond its chronological existence. In 1839 John Lindley contributed an invaluable addition to the botanical community—an Appendix to the First Twenty-Three Volumes of Edwards's Botanical Register. Within this appendix Lindley treated readers to A Sketch of the Vegetation of the Swan River Colony enriching the magazine's legacy with a comprehensive exploration of plant life.
